At the start of the National Council for the Social Studies Conference on Philadelphia Thursday, December 1, 2022, Rendell Center Executive Director and Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies Board member Beth Specker invited PCSS Executive Secretary David Keller Trevaskis to the stage following the Rendell Center's kickoff judicial panel to present the 2022 PCSS Social Studies Awards. Only three awards were given, reflecting PCSS' focus on the national conference in our own backyard this year. Pictured are (seated left) Future Social Studies Leader Zandi Hall, a senior in high school honored for her advocacy for LGBTQ students in her Central Bucks District and beyond, and Amy Palo (seated right), a teacher at Cornell High School in Coraopolis, the 2022 Pennsylvania Social Studies Teacher of the Year for her work helping students research the archives of Pittsburgh area newspapers. Kathy Smith, a professor at Chestnut Hill College and a newly elected PCSS Board member was unable to attend but she was awarded the Rendell Friend of Social Studies Award for her work promoting justice education, youth courts and mock trial at all levels.
