Teaching Sociology in High School

TEACHING SOCIOLOGY IN HIGH SCHOOL:

A WORKSHOP FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS

When:   Friday, April 13th, 2012 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where:  Pittsburgh Marriott City Center, Pittsburgh, PA

Cost:      $120 for preregistration—by March 26th; $135 after that date.  Checks should be made out to the North Central Sociological Association.  The registration fee includes lunch, a handbook of resources for teaching sociology and the right to attend any conference sessions of the NCSA all day on Saturday.

  • Exploring textbook options and resources on creative, active-learning lesson plans
  • Teaching about race, ethnicity, class, and gender
  • Enthuse Them or Lose Them: The First Day of Class
  •  Starting with the End: Using Assessment to Design your Class
  • Leading Discussions on Controversial Topics
  • Engaging Students Using Writing
  • Using Technology effectively
  • Utilizing the school and the classroom to develop a sociological perspective
  • Teaching resources from the American Sociological Association

 

Staff:     Workshop staff includes a high school teacher as well as professional sociologists from universities and liberal arts colleges who have published in the area of teaching sociology and who have extensive experience making presentations on teaching at the state, regional, and national levels.

CRUs:    Individuals interested in CRU or CEU credit will need to apply through their own school system.  You will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the workshop.
