As you are making your plans to come to the 65th Annual Pennsylvania Social Studies Statewide Conference, October 18-20, 2018 at the Red Lion Hotel Harrisburg East, 4751 Lindle Road. Harrisburg, PA 17111, know that we are excited to be joined by India S. Meissel, President, National Council for the Social Studies. President Meissel is Department Chair, History and Social Studies and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society Sponsor at Lakeland High School in Suffolk, VA. She plans to attend the entire conference and she will be giving this session on Friday, October 19th, 2018
Title: The Many Faces of Washington (George, That Is)
Discipline: U.S. History and Art
Audience Level: Secondary Level-High School
Abstract: Art is an exciting teaching resource. Using artwork depicting George Washington, this session will demonstrate techniques to assist students in analyzing and interpreting art as a window into History.
Objectives: This session will demonstrate how to:
- Select and interpret primary and secondary source materials for use in a social studies classroom.
- Evaluate the authenticity, authority, and credibility of sources.
- Formulate historical questions and defend findings based on inquiry and interpretation.
Content/Skills: Through the use of both primary and secondary sources, this session will focus on the use and interpretation of art in a Social Studies
Classroom: from a discussion of the work’s historical context to a focused observation of the piece, to the feelings evoked by the artist and his or her audience.
Presentation strategies: During this interactive session, the facilitator will present and model several instructional strategies to use when integrating works of art into the Social Studies classroom.
